This area was once the home of the Timucuan Indians. The Timucuan lived in Florida and parts of Georgia. It was estimated that there were approximately 50,000  Timucuan Indians. If your interested in learning about the Timucuan Indians just Google it there are many versions to the story.

These are a few links I have found. They seem factual. You can Google a lot more.

The only way to get there is by boat. There is a ferry that will take you across if you don't have one. And its free.
Back in the 50's they found a totem pole underwater over by where you park. This is a replica. The original they sent to Jacksonville.
Of course there is a picnic area right on the water.
There are several trails on the island. This one took us to a Indian mound. Along the way we came across this tree. We thought it was kinda cool.
And sadly enough this was the end of the trail. You're pretty much standing on top of a Indian dump. They call it a shell mound.

This ain't what I want. Take me back to the home page
